Covid-19 vaccinations: Three million doses administered as daily infections reach 19 506

South Africa has passed the three-million mark in its Covid-19 vaccination programme.

As of Wednesday, the total number of people vaccinated was 3 026 636, with 120 172 vaccine doses administered in the last 24 hours, the Department of Health said.

The country recorded 19 506 new laboratory-confirmed Covid-19 infections, as well as 383 deaths, bringing the death toll to 60 647 on Wednesday.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Wednesday, the country recorded in total 1 973 972 laboratory-confirmed cases.

"The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD)… reports that 19 506 new Covid-19 cases have been identified in South Africa, representing a 27.6% positivity rate," the statement read.

Gauteng has recorded 649 494 confirmed cases in total, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 354 09 and the Western Cape with 322 444.

"The Gauteng province accounts for the majority of new cases (57%), followed by the Western Cape (11%) and North West (7%)," NICD spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh said.

Gauteng recorded 11 160 new cases on Wednesday, the Western Cape 2 059 and North West 1 428.

There was an increase of 698 hospital admissions in the last 24 hours. There are currently 12 893 people admitted to both public and private hospitals.

South Africa conducted 13 133 428 tests in total, of which 70 593 were carried out in the last 24 hours.

The recovery rate is 88.6%, which translates to 1 748 042 recoveries.
