India's daily Covid-19 fatality rate climbed back above 1,000 after three days of respite, at a time the country's healthcare system is assessing the threat from a new Delta-Plus variant of the coronavirus.

1,005 patients succumbed to the deadly pathogen in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on July 1. India's total Covid-19 death toll stood at 3.99 lakh.

Nearly 49,000 people tested positive for the virus in the same period, while more than 61,000 recovered. Active infections dropped to 5.2 lakh.

Zydus Cadila Seeks Emergency Use Authorisation For Vaccine

Zydus Cadila has sought Emergency Use Authorisation from Drug Controller General of India for ZyCoV-D, its Plasmid DNA vaccine for Covid-19, Cadila Healthcare informed the exchanges on Thursday.

Interim results from Phase III clinical trials show primary efficacy of 66.6%, according to the statement. "No moderate case of Covid-19 disease was observed post administration of the third dose... No severe cases or deaths due to Covid-19 occurred after administration of the second dose."

The study carried out in more than 50 clinical sites spread across the country during the peak of second wave reaffirms the vaccine’s efficacy against new mutant strains especially the delta variant, the company added.
