Earlier this month 5FM DJ Nicole da Silva tied the knot with her boyfriend of five years, Chris. She shared some details on her big day, how they met and her bigger celebration plans!

Q: Congratulations on your nuptials! Tell us about your day?

Nicole: Thank you so much! We decided after we got engaged in December 2019 that we were going to only get married in 2021, which in retrospect was a good decision given the pandemic upturning all our lives.

With this year still being a bit unpredictable, we decided to legally marry ahead of our planned celebration - for two reasons. Nothing is certain. We might not have the celebration we're planning, but we didn't want our marriage to be on hold. And secondly, dates are important. The idea of having our wedding anniversary not tied to anything didn't sit well with us, so we chose our 5th dating anniversary to get married.

Plot twist: We had to move it out by a few weeks because a family member got Covid-19 a few days earlier, so it ended up being a random date anyway, but it was still very special and intimate. We got married in our officiator's garden with a small group of close friends and family to witness our vows. We then had some bubbles and snacks and went to a gorgeous restaurant called La Cucina Di Ciro for lunch to celebrate afterwards. My mom organised for one of our friends, Morné, to make a ridiculously amazing cake and decorate the table at the restaurant. It was perfect and intimate. I bought my dress online and had it taken in to fit my shape better.

Q: Tell us the story of how you two met.

Nicole: We met at a braai! I know, what a cliché, but it's the truth. One of my close friends from my campus radio days invited me over for a braai. I wasn't going to go because I was only finishing my show at 17:00, but she twisted my arm, and I went. Chris was invited by my friend's husband - who he worked with. We hit it off and had a bit of banter but didn't exchange numbers or anything. He sent me an inbox message on Facebook a couple of days later... that I didn't see for a few weeks. When I did see it, I replied, we went on a date the next weekend and have been together ever since.

Q: What has been the best highlight since you two got together?

Nicole: There have been a lot of moments over the years, but I think the overall highlight is knowing that I have someone in my life who loves and supports me in all the ways that really matter. We want what's best for each of us in our personal lives and for us as a couple. Having a partner that's fun to be with and an absolute rock of a human being when things aren't going well is amazing.

Q:  Will you be having a big celebration later on?

Nicole: Thankfully, Covid-19 didn't derail our plans too badly. We still plan on having a proper big celebration later this year. We're okay with the fact that a lot of our friends and family that live overseas and in SA won't be able to make it because of travel bans, quarantine, health concerns, financial strain etc., but we're going ahead anyway and are really looking forward to it. We hope we won't have to cut numbers, but if events aren't allowed at the time, we probably won't reschedule.

Q: What are your honeymoon plans if any?

Nicole: After the wedding this year we're going to do a mini-moon somewhere at the coast (it's a surprise that he's planning). When we can travel abroad, we're going to do a few weeks in one or two parts of Europe, whenever that is. Italy is definitely on the list.
