A beloved companion dog of a disabled boy has amazingly survived 12 days trapped behind a house retaining wall.

Echo, a miniature fox terrier cross cavalier spaniel, went missing on June 13 from an address at Hamlyn Terrace on the NSW central coast.

Meghan Randell, a single mother of three, then frantically began letterboxing images of the pooch as well as posting on numerous local community group Facebook pages in a bid to locate him.

Eventually a local woman, known only as Lee, offered to help look for Echo at the Randell family home - and soon found him in a hole in a retaining wall where he was trapped.

A kind hearted neighbour then helped free Echo, who required urgent medical attention.

The vet - where Ms Randell works - said the next 24 hours were going to be crucial.

Echo was in the wars - he had lost a quarter of his body weight, was dehydrated so badly he could suffer kidney failure and had multiple sores after digging and scratching on the sleepers in the wall trying to free himself.

He was also forced to eat dirt to survive.

'It was going to be iffy but the next day I went in and Echo was sitting up waiting for me,' Ms Randell told the Central Coast Express Advocate.

'The next day he was wagging his tail. 'I'm not a big crier but when I saw he was alive I just lost it.'

Ms Randell bought Echo for disabled son, Lincoln, 11, when he was a toddler - and the pair have been inseparable ever since.

After almost two weeks stuck in the dirt, Echo has sadly gone blind - but his biggest fan Lincoln is just delighted to have his 'best mate' back.

A family friend has also set up a GoFundMe page to assist with medical costs, with a specialist to determine if Echo's infected eyes need to be removed.
