Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cobbler?

A cobbler is a fruit dessert with a biscuit or cake batter-like topping. The baked result often looks “cobbled” with dollops of topping between the fruit, thus the name. These desserts were first made in the 1850s. Crisps and crumbles, on the other hand, have more of a crumb topping, sometimes including oatmeal. They became popular later, in the early 1900s.

Why Make a Cobbler?

First, it’s an easy way to make a fruit dessert. A cobbler is definitely easier than making a pie. This recipe can easily be adapted to use different fruit, like one single berry or diced peaches or sauteed apple cubes. The flavors can change with the seasons! Also, the ingredients are easy to obtain, plus no special equipment is needed!

What Kind of Berries Can I Use in a Berry Cobbler?

You can easily use just one berry or even four different berries. Just use the best, ripest seasonal berries that you love. There are no strawberries or blackberries in this cobbler, but they’d both be delicious additions.

Can I Use Frozen Berries in My Cobbler?

Yes, frozen berries will definitely work, though they’re most often juicier than fresh berries. It would be wise to toss your frozen berries with 2 tablespoons flour to compensate for the extra liquid. Or just enjoy a juicier berry cobbler. Do not thaw the berries first and extend the baking time as needed.
