Covington police say a 26-year-old woman found with apparent gunshot wounds at City Heights has died.

Correction:While the Kenton County Detention Center listed Brooks-Kellis as being held on a $100,000 bond, the Covington Police Department says he is being held without bond. This story has been updated with the latest information from Covington police.

Covington police have arrested a man in connection with the fatal shooting of a woman at a Northern Kentucky housing project early Tuesday morning.

Edwin Brooks-Kellis, 28, is facing charges of murder and receiving stolen property, according to a release from the Kenton County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.

Police responded to the 2400 block of White Court around 2 a.m. and found 26-year-old Ashley Kilgore, of Covington, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, officers said.

Kilgore was taken to St. Elizabeth Covington Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Officers arrested Brooks-Kellis during a traffic stop after receiving reports from 911 callers that he was attempting to flee in a dark-colored van, according to an arrest report posted on Facebook by the attorney's office.

An investigation indicated that Brooks-Kellis fired the fatal shots from a second-story window of his residence at 2415 White Court, the report states.

Police executed a search warrant on the residence and found multiple 9mm shell casings and a stolen handgun, the report states, adding Brooks-Kellis is the residence's only occupant.

After his arrest, Brooks-Kellis admitted to shooting Kilgore and fleeing the scene in a black Dodge van, the report states. He stated he had used a different gun during the shooting than the one police recovered from his residence, adding the murder weapon was still in his van.

Brooks-Kellis is currently being held without bond at the Kenton County Detention Center. A court date is scheduled for Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.
