Tamil Nadu added 4,512 fresh Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, and number of deaths crossed the 100-mark to 118 after reporting 91 deaths on Sunday and 98 on Monday. After discharge of 6,013 patients, the state had 39,335 people undergoing treatment for the viral infection. Cumulative case tally touched 24.75 lakh while the toll reached 32,506. Director of public health Dr TS Selvavinayagam said fresh cases and positivity rate have been steadily dropping across Tamil Nadu. “The state has relaxed lockdown restrictions in several areas, but it is still important for people to stay at home unless it is required to step out. Wear masks and maintain social distance,” he said.
On Tuesday, while Coimbatore reported 563 new cases, all other districts recorded fewer than 500 cases. Three western districts Erode (493),
Salem (302) and Tirupur (281) were among the top five districts along with Chennai, which logged 275 cases. With fresh cases coming down, active cases were less than 5,000 across all districts. Coimbatore had 4,676 people under treatment, followed by 4,163 in Erode. At least 25 districts reported fewer than 100 fresh cases on Tuesday – with
Perambalur (20) and
Ramanathapuram (15) at the bottom of the fresh cases list.
Of the 118 deaths, Coimbatore and
Madurai reported 12 each, followed by nine in Salem and seven each in Chennai, Ranipet and Vellore. The case fatality rate – number of deaths over total number of people testing positive -- remained at 1.3% on Tuesday for Tamil Nadu. While
Vellore and
Thirupathur had more than 2% case fatality rate, Dindugal had 1.9%.
