Supreme Court to NDMA: Fix compensation for kin of Covid victims within six weeks

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to determine within six weeks the ex-gratia amount that can be paid to each Covid victim.
The apex court said that NDMA is statutorily mandated to provide minimum standards of relief, including the ex-gratia to Covid victims. The NDMA has failed in discharging its statutory duty by not providing the ex-gratia amount.
However, a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan, in its judgment refused to fix a specific amount as ex-gratia for Covid victims saying it is a matter of finance and should be left to the executive.
India has recorded nearly 3.9 lakh deaths due to the Covid pandemic, which has been declared a disaster under the Disaster Management Act.
