Delhi is likely to receive light rain on July 2 and 3, which may bring down its soaring temperatures by some degrees, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday. However, there is bad news for North India as Haryana, Punjab, Delhi and parts of Rajasthan will have to wait for monsoon rains.
The IMD said further advance of the Southwest Monsoon is unlikely in these states till July 7 as the weather conditions are not favourable for it.
"The heatwave is likely to continue in Delhi. Light rain is predicted on July 2 and 3, and temperature might drop. Conditions for monsoons are not favourable and are delayed," IMD's Kuldeep Srivastava was quoted as saying news agency ANI.
The IMD also said temperatures in many parts of Northwest India are likely to cross 40°C due to dry and hot westerly winds.
MONSOON's JOURNEY SO FAR
As per the IMD, as on Wednesday, monsoon has covered most parts of the country except parts of Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana and Punjab.
"Since June 19, there has not been any progress of monsoon. It was due to impact mid-latitude westerly winds and unfavourable Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) and absence of formation of low pressure system over North Bay of Bengal," the IMD said.
It added that due to these factors, further advance of monsoon into remaining parts of Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana and Punjab is not likely till July 7.
RAINFALL PREDICTION
The IMD has predicted fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall over Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim and Northeastern states during the next six-seven days.
Besides this, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during next three days. Isolated extremely rainfall is also likely over Assam and Meghalaya on Thursday.
"Due to strengthening of moist easterly winds along the northern Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand from tomorrow (July 1), enhanced rainfall activity with isolated heavy falls very likely over eastern Uttar Pradesh during the next five days and over Uttarakhand from July 1 to 4," the IMD forecast said.
It has also warned that moderate to severe thunderstorm accompanied by lightning is very likely over Bihar and Jharkhand during next 24 hours. "This may cause injuries leading to casualties to people and animals staying outdoors."
HEAT WAVE TO CONTINUE IN DELHI
As per the IMD, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Rajasthan and western Uttar Pradesh are likely to see heat wave conditions during the next two days.
