Over 7,000 hit by floods in 2 Assam districts

GUWAHATI: Over 7,000 people, including 1,877 children of 96 villages in Assam’s two eastern districts—Dhemaji and Dibrugarh have been hit by flood in the last 24 hours.
According to the state government’s Flood Reporting and Information System (FRIMS), 3,870 people have been affected in Jonai and Dhemaji revenue circles in Dhemaji district and 3,717 in Chabua circle in Dibrugarh district.
Two other revenue circles, Manikpur and Srijangram of Bongaigaon district in western part of the state have also been affected by flood but so far there is no report of any population being hit.
Over 11 hectare of crop area has also been affected by the deluge in the three districts.
These apart, flood water of Jhanji river has damaged the embankment at Dhantula area in Jorhat district while as many as parts of 13 roads and four bridges at various locations have been damaged in Bonagigaon district.
In Tinsukia district at Sadiya, an agri bund-cum-road at Bisnupur Pohukhowa village constructed under MGNREGA was breached by the overflowing waters of Kundil River water.
The flooded rivers, particularly Brahmaputra river has caused erosion at several places in Baksa, Barpeta, Dhemaji, Goalpara, Morigaon and South Salmara districts.
