General Hospital star Stuart Damon dies aged 84 after battle with renal failure over the past few years
General Hospital star Stuart Damon has died aged 84, his son has confirmed.
The actor, who devoted over 30 years of his life to playing Dr. Alan Quartermaine on ABC's General Hospital and spinoff Port Charles, had been battling renal failure over the past few years.
Stuart's son Christopher announced his passing to ABC7 reporter George Pennacchio and said General Hospital was his father's 'favourite place to be'.

Christopher said: 'He loved playing Alan and was always so appreciative of that role and that job. It was his passion.'

General Hospital's executive producer Frank Valentini also paid tribute to Stuart on Tuesday.
He wrote: 'On behalf of everyone at #GH, I want to extend my deepest condolences to Stuart Damon's family and all who loved him. Stuart was an absolute legend of our industry and he'll be sorely missed.'

ABC7 reporter George said Stuart had been 'struggling with renal failure for the last several years' in a Facebook post.
He added: 'He was a kind, loving and friendly man. It's something Christopher heard his entire life. It was my honor to know Stuart Damon. May this Prince R.I.P.'
Stuart earned six Daytime Emmy nominations for his role in General Hospital and won in 1999 -- 22 years after joining the cast -- for outstanding supporting actor in a drama series.
The New York native was born in Brooklyn Feb. 5, 1937 and later went on to graduate from Brandeis University in 1958.
He first took his talents to Broadway in 1959 in the ensemble of 'First Impressions' and then spent over a year in the original production of 'Irma la Douce.'

Bringing his theatrical prowess to the screen, Damon's status grew with his performance in CBS' 1965 production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's 'Cinderella' as the prince. He then jumped to London and appeared in a number of musicals and television shows, including 'The Champions,' 'Charlie Girl,' 'Man of Magic' and 'The New Avengers.'
Through the aughts, Damon stayed in the world of soap operas and joined 'Days of Our Lives' as Gov. Jim Ford and 'As the World Turns' as Ralph Manzo for a number of episodes.
His other television credits include 'Fantasy Island,' 'Naked City,' 'Hotel' and 'Yanks Go Home.'
Damon is survived by wife Deirdre Ottewill, who he was married to for 60 years, and their children Jennifer and Christopher.
