- Police have arrested two relatives who allegedly took part in the brazen theft of weapons at the Tyefu police station in the Eastern Cape.
- The thieves fled with an R5 rifle, two 9mm pistols, six full 9mm magazines and one R5 magazine with 28 rounds.
- The robbery took place after the two officers on-duty left to attend to a case in the area.
A team of police officers arrested two armed cousins who allegedly broke into the Tyefu police station in the Eastern Cape on Sunday and made off with several firearms, ammunition and computers.
The brazen thieves made off with an R5 rifle, two 9mm pistols, six full 9mm magazines and one R5 magazine with 28 rounds.
The two officers on duty were attending to a domestic violence complaint when thieves broke into the police station.
Police swiftly launched a search for the thieves, and on Monday, East London Hawks members, the King William's Town K9 Unit, the Flying Squad and Tyefu police officers responded to reports of a gunman randomly firing shots in the Ndlambe administration area.
Upon seeing the police, the gunman opened fire and attempted to flee.
Police spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela said the gunman fled into nearby bushes, where he was later apprehended.
"A 9mm pistol with three rounds was confiscated during his arrest. Further investigation led officers to the gunman's cousin, [and] four loaded 9mm magazines were recovered in a kraal. A pistol was also found in the cousin's room.
"Two other magazines and a computer monitor were recovered hidden in the toilet. The team also uncovered two computer processing units hidden in the bushes near Tyefu police station," Mgolodela said.
The recovered IT equipment and weapons belong to the Tyefu police station.
The two cousins, aged 22 and 25, are expected to appear in the Peddie Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
They will be facing charges of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and possession of stolen property.
