Ranchi: The state education department has started classes for government school students on Doordarshan and All India Radio (AIR) with an aim to teach the maximum number of students who are facing problems in attending online classes.
The objective of the classes, which started on Monday as the schools were closed because of the Covid-induced lockdowns, is to provide an extra option to the students apart from the existing platforms on social media networks to cover the curriculum.
Education secretary Rajesh Sharma said the programme on Doordarshan is from 10am to 12 noon and from 1pm to 2pm. “A subject-wise routine has been prepared and the learning material has also been provided,” he said.
The radio programmes are broadcast on different subjects from the stations of Jharkhand between 9am and 9.30am for the morning session. The evening classes will be held for 10 minutes for each subject from 5.20pm to 6pm. The classes are broadcast from the centres at Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Chaibasa, Hazaribag and Daltonganj as well as from Bhagalpur in Bihar.
Sharma said, “We are hoping that a large number of students would benefit from the programmes. Both Doordarshan and AIR are easily accessible across the state.”
The education department is likely to take feedback about the students’ involvement with Doordarshan and AIR programmes next week.
It may be stated here that the government is also carrying out online classes in 6,500 government schools but the attendance of students is below satisfaction. Lack of smart gadgets among students and poor connectivity are the major factors for the low coverage. A senior government official said the students would find it more comfortable attending the classes on Doordarshan than on a mobile phone.
