Love Island's Yewande Biala calls for bosses to employ black producers to pick a diverse cast who are 'open to dating black women' - after Kaz was picked last in the coupling

Yewande Biala has called for Love Island to employ more black producers in a bid to encourage a more diverse cast on the show.

The reality star, 26, who appeared on the fifth series of the programme in 2019, made her remarks during a chat with Capital Xtra host Will Njobvu on Wednesday morning, saying contestants 'who are open to dating black women' should be chosen by 'black producers who can cast' them.

She discussed how current series contestant Kaz Kamwi, 26, was picked last in the first coupling on Monday's show, a situation she found herself in back in 2019.

Yewanda explained: '[Kaz] wasn't picked at all and it was really sad to see because obviously I was in that position two years ago and, watching it again, it was hard, and I was kind of praying for a different outcome for Kaz.

'I think what a lot of people don't realise about Love Island is that, I always say it's a mirror image of the society with live in now, where black women are never really seen or admired by black men or any other kind of race.

'We're always pushed to the sideline and it's obviously highlighted on a show like Love Island where there's obviously only like 12, 10 contestants and one of them is black, and it kind of shows the society we live in at the moment.'

MailOnline has contacted ITV for comment.

In 2019, Yewande was picked last in the coupling following Samira Mighty, 25, also being the final girl paired up in 2018.

Yewande, a scientist from Dublin, wasn't chosen by any of the men, or initially even kissed during any of the 'challenges' the contestants were told to carry out.

Radio host Will asked Yewande what she thought the problem was, saying it was 'history repeating itself'.

He said: 'So what needs to be done then? Is it like, Love Island need to think about casting more men who are genuinely into black women?'

Yewande replied: 'I think that would be a start, casting more diverse contestants but also casting contestants who are open to dating black women would help as well.

'Maybe more of hiring more black producers who can cast these contestants probably would help as well.'

Love Island fans shared their frustration after Kaz was picked last in the first coupling on Monday's show.

The fashion blogger stepped forward for Aaron Francis but ended up being paired with Toby Aromolaran during the series opener.

Several viewers soon took to Twitter, with some comparing Kaz being the last girl to be chosen by the boys to Yewande and Samira's time in the villa.

Yewande (pictured on Love Island in 2019) said she could relate to what Kaz was going through as she was even stood on the very same spot in the villa as when Kaz was rejected

Although not stepping forward for Toby, Kaz and the semi pro footballer seemed to be getting along in the villa and were seen chatting on the beds.

During the episode, Toby said: 'Yeah there is attractiveness to Kaz because she is so bubbly, so funny. I bounce off her... We've got a good relationship going at the moment.'

However despite things seeming to be going well, some fans were left angry at Kaz not being picked earlier by one of the five boys in the line-up.

Reaction: Some fans took to Twitter to share their frustration about Kaz being picked last

One fan tweeted: 'I am late but my only thoughts on love island tonight are kaz deserved better than being picked last she is so gorgeous.'

While another added: 'These love islanders best not treat Kaz the way they treated previous black girls that went on the show #LoveIsland'

Someone else shared their frustration as they penned: 'Should I even be surprised that Kaz got picked last? Same s**t every year ffs.'

Tune into Will Njobvu on Capital XTRA Saturdays from 9am – 1pm and Sundays 4pm - 7pm.
