Mukul Goel appointed as new UP DGP

Lucknow, Jun 30 (UNI) The government on Wednesday appointed Mr Mukul Goel, a 1987-batch Indian Police Services (IPS) officer as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Uttar Pradesh.

State Additional Chief Secretary Home Awanish Awasthi, in a statement, here, said that Mr Goel, has been appointed as the new DGP of UP as the present DGP HC Awasthi retired from service today.

Mr Goel is presently on central deputation as Additional DG of the Border Security Force (BSF) Operations in Delhi and will be relieved from his central deputation soon and till then, ADG (L&O) Prasant Kumar would work on DG’s post, the charge handed over to him by the outgoing DGP H C Awasthi.

Interestingly, Mr Goel's meeting with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday had already given an indication towards his new appointment.

Holding a B.Tech degree in Electrical Engineering from the Delhi IIT, Mr Goel has served in the UP Police in various capacities. He was made ADG (L&O) in the Akhilesh Yadav regime after the infamous Muzaffarnagar riots started in August 27, 2013 in which over 60 people were killed and over 50,000 rendered homeless.

The UPSC had earlier sent the names of Nasir Kamal (1986 batch), Mukul Goel and RP Singh’s (both 1987 batch) names to select one among them for the top UP cop’s post.

Sujan Veer Singh was also an IPS officer of 1986 batch but his name was not included as he will retire in August this year.

Besides the above three senior most IPS officers, the names of some other junior officers like Dr RK Vishwakarma, DS Chauhan, and Anand Kumar, all of 1988 batch were also taken as the probable for the DG post.

It may be mentioned that CM Adityanath took to Twitter to praise H C Awasthi for his services. He said that the officer had a good record of 36 years of service and had played a good role during the pandemic, as a member of Team 9.

Mr Awasthi has informed that he would not take a ceremonial farewell and parade on his retirement due to the ongoing pandemic. Along with Mr Awasthi, 21 police officers including nine IPS officers from UP cadre retired on Wednesday.

Amongst those who retired today were 1985 batch IPS officer Arun Kumar, presently on central deputation as DG of Railway Protection Force (RPF), IG Intelligence in Lucknow, Jitendra Kumar Shukla, DIG Dinesh Chandra Dubey, IG Rajesh Kumar Pandey, DIG Dilip Kumar, and SP - Sadhna Goswami, Madhwa Prasad Verma and Virendra Kumar Mishra.

Surprisingly unlike IPS Pankaj Kumar, whose suspension was revoked by the government just on the day of his retirement, no similar move was made for Dinesh Chandra Dubey, who retired in his suspension.

Born in Muzaffarnagar, Mr Goel is also a recipient of the Police Medal for Gallantry (2003), Police Medal for Meritorious Services (2003) and the President Police Medal for distinguished services (2012). He will retire in February, 2024.
