Reliance
Industries is planning to start production of batteries and set up hydrogen
fuel cell plants in India. Mukesh Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Industries Limited
(RIL), has made a statement about creating batteries and developing hydrogen
fuel cell plants in India. The company earmarked 5,000 acres of land in
Jamnagar, Gujarat for developing the Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex
as one of the largest integrated renewable energy manufacturing facilities in
the world. Reliance will invest Rs 750 billion over three years.
The company will
also develop a green hydrogen-making electrolyser, solar photovoltaic module
factories and other self-sustainable energy resources. There will be four Giga
factories in total.
The
announcements from Reliance Industries fall in line with the Indian
government’s strategy to actively pursue renewable sources of energy. While the
central government has announced fresh packages for EV adoption under the FAME
II scheme, state governments have their EV policies as well.
They are also pushing for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
With the announcement
from RIL to venture into this space, we can expect the company to get into
making EV chargers and setting them up at strategic points around the country.
This will make access to EVs easier for the general public. Even the exuberant
cost involved to buy an EV due to the battery pack’s high price might come down
due to local production and procurement.
Reliance aims to
employ a huge number of individuals through this New Energy Business. The
company will also create two divisions – Renewable Energy Project Management
and Construction Division and Renewable Energy Project Finance Division. There
is also a plan to harness 100GW of solar energy by the year 2030.
