Woman Cowers in Bedroom as Home Intruder Drinks Iced Tea, Takes Shower Until Police Arrive

A woman in Tennessee was forced to hide inside her bedroom after an intruder broke into her house, drank iced tea from her refrigerator, and helped himself to a shower, according to police.

The break-in took place around 2 a.m. on Tuesday in the Hermitage neighborhood of Nashville, WKRN reported. According to the news outlet, Metropolitan Nashville Police responded to a reported burglary after a man jumped onto the balcony of a home and forced his way inside.

The suspect, identified by police as 31-year-old Michael Williams, allegedly started banging on the woman's front door before breaking into her balcony and entering through her patio door.

The victim told police that she then locked herself in her bedroom out of fear and called 911. The woman, who was not identified in media reports, said Williams then started screaming and repeatedly banged on her bedroom door.

Before officers arrived, police said Williams took an iced tea from the woman's refrigerator and drank it before hopping in the shower. The suspect was still in the shower when police first entered the home, WKRN reported.

Williams was arrested and booked into the Metro jail Tuesday morning on a charge of aggravated burglary. His bond was set at $25,000, WKRN reported.

Newsweek contacted the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department for additional comment.

Tuesday's incident in Nashville was one of several reports of home intrusions across the country this month. On June 21, a woman in Rochester, Pennsylvania, said she had the feeling of being watched in her sleep, and woke up to find a burglar inside her home.

"I had a feeling someone was watching me so I opened my eyes and see a blurry figure walking towards the door as fast as [they] could," she told WTAE-TV. The woman did not want to be identified for fear of retaliation.

During that incident, police said the burglar allegedly stole the woman's phone from her bedroom. The suspect was not immediately identified by police.

Two days earlier, surveillance video footage captured a homeless man breaking into a California home, and walking around naked before allegedly killing two pet parakeets. The 34-year-old suspect was identified by the Los Angeles Police Department as Paul Kiyan, and reportedly accessed the home by using a garage door opener he found in an unlocked vehicle.

"He went to the birdcage and violently grabbed our kids' birds and threw them on the floor and stomped on them," The owner of the home, Mat Sabz, told ABC 7. "My kids were the ones who found their dead birds with broken neck inside the house."

Sabz said the incident was "extremely traumatizing" for him and his family, even though the others were not at home at the time.

The man was arrested by the LAPD and is facing burglary charges as well as charges of animal cruelty.
