Stan Wawrinka also withdraws from Tokyo Olympics tennis tournament

Former Olympic Games gold medalist Stan Wawrinka partnered with the growing list of players withdrawing from the Tokyo Olympics. Stan Wawrinka had won three Grand Slam titles and also won an Olympic title in men’s doubles alongside Roger Federer at Beijing in 2008. Stan has undergone surgery on his left foot. He hasn’t played a single tour sinch Doha in March.

His team management stated, “He is very disappointed not to be able to play in the Tokyo Games and represent Switzerland in Tokyo. But he is working hard on his recovery and towards his goal of getting back on the court as soon as possible.”

He joined Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Simona Halep, and Dominic Thiem in withdrawing from the Games which is starting in Tokyo on July 23. He has struggled to find his A-game since the knee injury in 2017 when he had gone through two surgeries in August and skipped the rest of the season that year.

He has played four tournaments in 2021, with a record of 3-3, and has stayed around the 30th spot on the ATP ranking list. So recently, Wawrinka and Halep join the list of withdrawing from Tokyo Olympics 2020. Stan claimed the title in Geneva in May 2017, and that remains his last ATP Trophy.
