Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has approved multinational pharmaceutical company Cipla`s request of import and marketing of Moderna`s COVID-19 vaccine for restricted emergency use in India.

Cipla on Monday applied for permission to import Moderna COVID-19 vaccines citing DCGI notices on April 15 and June 1 that the vaccine could be sold without testing if the USFDA approves it for the European Union. The vaccine has already been authorised by WHO for emergency use.

Cipla has requested import and marketing authorization of these jabs on behalf of a US pharma company.

Moderna and Pfizer are among the companies that appealed to the Indian government to do away with the requirement of local trials after allowing emergency use.
