New Delhi, June 28

The Delhi Police today said the Special Cell of the force’s Northern Region (NR) has arrested Gurjot Singh, wanted in the Red Fort violence case with a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head, from Amritsar in Punjab.

DCP Special Cell Sanjeev Yadav said: “Gurjot Singh, who was wanted in FIR No. 96/21 (Red Fort case) and carried a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head, has been arrested by a team of NR of special cell from Amritsar.”

Gurjot was produced in a local court, which remanded him in police custody for three days and allowed his counsel to meet him every day for half an hour.

In February, the Delhi Police had announced a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh for information leading to the arrest of the accused persons, including Gurjot Singh, Deep Sidhu, Jugraj Singh, Gurjant Singh and others, in the case.

Gurjot has been accused of involvement in hoisting religious flags at Red

Fort and had been at large ever since.

“After the incident, Gurjot spoke to the media where he disclosed his role in the incident of flag hoisting at the historic monument. On that basis, he was wanted in the case and a reward of Rs 1 lakh was announced for his arrest,” the DCP said.

The police had been conducting searches in Delhi and Punjab to nab the accused, who participated in the violent clashes between the police and farmers during the Republic Day tractor march.

Unprecedented chaos was unleashed upon Delhi on the Republic Day as the tractor rally by the protesting farmers went off the designated course and rolled into the iconic Red Fort. A protester had died on the way and over 400 security forces were reportedly injured in the incident.

The farmers entered the forecourt of the Red Fort, climbed on to its ramparts, and hoisted religious flags.
