All colleges in Tamil Nadu should start admissions only after July 31: Minister

CHENNAI: All colleges in Tamil Nadu should start admissions only after July 31 after declaration of Class XII results, higher education minister K Ponmudi said on Monday.
Following the announcement of evaluation criteria for Class XII students, the higher education minister and other officials on Monday held a meeting with chief minister M K Stalin on college admissions.
"We came to know that some private colleges had started admissions. The chief minister instructed that college admissions should start only after the declaration of Class XII results. So, the college admissions will start on August 1. If any college start admissions now, the government will take action," he said.
However, the admissions to polytechnic colleges which are based on Class IX marks commenced last week.
As per the evaluation method announced by the state government, Class X board exams would carry 50% weightage while Class XI marks would carry 20% weightage. The government gave 30% weightage to Class XII internal assessment and practical exams.
He said there was no link between cancellation of MPhil by Madras University and National Education Policy 2020. "The opinion is divided among teachers and students about the need for an MPhil degree. Some universities have discontinued it. But, it is not connected with NEP," Ponmudi added.
He said the government would take steps to appoint professors in Tamil Nadu as vice-chancellors of Anna University and Annamalai University.
The CBSE and the state board have announced that they would declare Class XII results based on the evaluation criteria before July 31.
"Colleges need to consider the CBSE and state board Class XII marks to rank the students for giving admissions. These two boards will finalise the marks before July 31. So, the admissions to government, government-aided colleges and private colleges will start only after July 31," the minister said.
