GOOD PERFORMANCES CAN HELP KNOCK DOORS FOR T20 WC CALL-UP, SAYS DRAVID

Former Team India captain Rahul Dravid

Rahul Dravid, India head coach for the Sri Lanka tour, on Sunday said that he hopes the white-ball squad is able to give good performances and with that, they are able to knock the doors of selectors for a callup for the T20 World Cup which is set to be played later this year.

India and Sri Lanka will lock horns in three ODIs and three T20Is, beginning July 13. The likes of Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav are in the white-ball squad and they all would be looking to cement their place in the T20 World Cup squad. “So like you said, rightly there are a lot of people in the squad who are pushing for places or looking to cement their places in the sort of T20 World Cup. But the key goal for everyone in the squad and in the team is to try and win the series, we have had discussions around it. That is the primary objective. We are going out there to win the series, hopefully, people get the opportunity to put in good performances in the course of us trying to win the series, and knock the doors of the selectors,” said Dravid while replying to an ANI query during a pre-departure press conference on Sunday.

Further talking about how he would be in constant touch with the team management in England, Dravid said: “These are the only three games before the T20 World Cup. I am sure that the selectors and management will have an idea by now about what they are looking for. There’s an IPL before the World Cup. In that sense, there may be one or two places the management and selectors might be looking to fill. So give them a few more options, that would be the goal in the upcoming three T20Is.”

“We have a couple of selectors travelling with us, we’ll interact with them once we land in Sri Lanka. Had a little bit of contact with the management in England. Haven’t disturbed them during the WTC final, so will touch base with them over the next couple of weeks and see what are their thoughts and what they are thinking for the T20 WC and whether we can implement that in these next three T20Is,” he added.

For the limited series against Sri Lanka, Shikhar Dhawan would don the captaincy hat. Talking about leading the side for the first time, Dhawan said: “So it is a great honour for me to be the captain of the Indian team. I am looking forward to it, we have all played under Rahul Dravid’s coaching at least once, I was the captain of India A at that time, we had played against Bangladesh. I feel we guys think together, we are looking forward to the series, we will be looking to build positive things and there should be a very happy environment in which boys can express themselves and we get the best out of them.”

On swimmer Sajan Prakash qualifying for the Olympics, his mother V.J. Shantymol expressed immense happiness, thanking everyone for their support and encouragement. She expressed special thanks to coach Pradeep Kumar, the Swimming Federation of India and the Government of India and above all, God. Shantymol herself was an international athlete in the 1980s.

Sajan on Saturday became the first-ever Indian swimmer to breach the ‹A› Olympic qualification time by clocking 1:56:38 seconds in the men’s 200m butterfly event at the Sette Colli Trophy in Rome, Italy. The 27-year-old made the Tokyo Games ‘A’ standard, set at 1:56.48 seconds, by 0.10 seconds at the FINA-accredited Olympic qualifier.

Sajan Prakash’s recent achievement comes just 6 days after he bagged the gold medal in the men’s 200m butterfly event at the FINA-accredited Olympic Qualifying event, also called the Belgrade Trophy swimming competition. The 27-year-old swimmer from Kerala clocked a time of 1:56.96s to beat the rest of the competition in Serbia.

His coach Pradeep Kumar said, “I think his achievement is only because of his hard work and he deserves every bit of it.  Now it is history. We are still far from achieving the main target of finishing at the podium. He has given confidence to every swimmer in the country.”

The Kerala swimmer has been continuously improving his performance in the 200m butterfly event and holds India›s best performance in his name. Today Sajan also improved upon India’s best performance in the 200 metre freestyle event. Sajan clocked 1.49.73 which gave him “B” qualification. The B qualification time for Tokyo in the 200m was 1.50.23 in this event as well. Previously India’s best performance was in the name of Virdhawal Khade 1.49.86 established in 2008.

Sajan was the only Indian male swimmer who represented India in the 2016 Rio Olympics. He was the only one to qualify in three events with B timings for Rio. After qualifying for the Olympics, he promised his best in Tokyo.

Four years later Sajan has created history by becoming the first Indian swimmer to qualify for Tokyo Games with ‘A’ timings. Sajan Prakash is coached by Dronacharya awardee coach Pradeep Kumar. For the last few months he has been training at Dubai with Pradeep Kumar.

ROUND OF 16: WALES TAKE ON DENMARK TODAY

Published

on

13 days of non-stop action from the Group Stages of Euro 2021 is a treat we all lapped up after a year of waiting courtesy the Covid Pandemic and the following lockdowns. But these 36 matches are only part of the first course of a grand 5 course football buffet that surely will leave every football lover begging for more!

With the group stages over, the round of 16 is all set to kick off from today with the opening day featuring a mouthwatering fixture. The first match of the Opening day of the Pre Quarter Finals will feature Wales against Denmark at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam.

Denmark was the second best team in Group B and scripted a fairy tale journey to qualify for the Round of 16 at this edition of the Euros. After suffering the mid-game collapse of their talismanic attacking midfielder Christian Eriksen and losing to Finland by a solitary goal, the Danes took their time to settle into their groove. Their flair was on display in bits and patches during their 1-2 loss to the FIFA World No 1 team Belgium but in their final group game against Russia the music and the rhythm was only theirs. Denmark played the game of the lives to outplay Russia in a one sided affair with the score line reading 4-1 in their favour. Mikkel Damsgaard, Andreas Christensen, Joakim Mæhle will be shouldering the responsibility of breaking open the gaps in the Wales defense. Yussuf Polsen has already found the opposition net twice. The first coming from a brilliant effort to beat an in-form Thibaut Courtois, who is considered by many as one of the best keepers in the world. One cannot forget their Leicester City Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and left Winger Martin Braithwaite of Barcelona who have had a big role in keeping the Danes in the game.

In these Euros, Wales are a side that has one thing that no other team has. That is their 31 year old Captain Gareth Bale who currently is on loan to Tottenham Hotspurs from Real Madrid. The six times Welsh Footballer of the Year is yet to find his name on the scoresheet but his presence and assists has helped Aaron Ramsey, Connor Roberts and Kieffer Moore to score for Wales. Danny Ward has let in only 2 goals in the Group stages and will hold the key if Wales aspires to scale as high and beyond their Semifinal finish in Euro 2016.

Denmark does have the edge in this game but with the going getting tough and little room for errors the big game players like Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey can stand out and change the course of the game. The game does promise to have edge to edge action and much will rest on the goalkeepers and their ability to deny the opposition from finding the mark.

The second game features four-time World Champions Italy against Austria on June 27, Sunday. The two teams have locked horns 35 times previously where the Azzurri have 16 and Austria have won 11 matches to their credit, while 8 ending in draws. The last time these two sides faced each other was in August 2008 where the game ended in a 2-2 draw. Italy, who won their maiden European title in 1968, have changed in game, style and character in this edition of the Euros and surprised everyone in the footballing world. Roberto Mancini has more than a few options in finding the opposition net, the team relies on Lazio striker Ciro Immobile and Manuel Locatelli of Sassuolo who have two goals to their credit apart from Lorenzo Insigne and Matteo Pessina. The Italian stallions topped Group A firing in 7 goals in their 3 matches and not conceding a single goal. It is a good reflection of the tight defense knot in front of the 6 feet 5 inch tall AC Milan keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Austria on the other hand, lost their group match against Netherlands 0-2 and also conceded goals against debutants North Macedonia while managing a 1-0 win over Ukraine. While they rely on their strikers Gregoritsch and Arnautović to drive inroads into the opposition, their right full back Stefan Lainer who plays for Borussia Mönchengladbach is a goal searching overlapping proposition. But against a formidable defense line like the Netherlands they lacked the firepower and could manage only 8 attacks that could reach the Dutch goal and forcing a save only once.

The odds are stacked against the Austrian side and the balance sways ever so gently toward the Italians when these two face each other at Wembley stadium in London.

Picking Jadeja backfired on India: Manjrekar on WTC final loss

Published

on

Having Ravindra Jadeja in the playing XI for the World Test Championship (WTC) final backfired on India, said former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar, who also added that fielding Hanuma Vihari instead could have helped them put on a few more runs to challenge New Zealand.

“If you have to look at how India went about before the game started, picking two spinners was always a debatable selection especially when the conditions were overcast and the toss was delayed by a day. They picked one player for his batting, which was Jadeja, and his left-arm spin wasn’t the reason he was picked. He was picked for his batting and that is something that I am always against,” Manjrekar said on ESPNCricinfo.

India lost the match by 8 wickets to New Zealand in Southampton, suffering middle and lower order capitulations in both innings.

According to Manjrekar, having a specialist batsman instead of Jadeja could have helped India post a target in excess of 200 for New Zealand.

“You have got to pick specialist players in the team and if they felt that the pitch was dry and turning, they would have picked Jadeja for his left-arm spin, along with Ashwin, that would have made sense. But they picked him for his batting and I think that backfired as mostly it does,” Manjrekar said.

On the upcoming Test series against England, Manjrekar said: “I hope India don’t do what England have historically done, pick somebody because there is another strength that they have and that strength might just come to good use, but very rarely it does when it’s a pressure game.”

Meanwhile former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar is “amazed” after knowing that Virat Kohli and his men will be on a “three-week holiday” before the start of England Test series after “poor preparation” cost them the World Test Championship final against New Zealand.

Vengsarkar, also a former chief selector, feels India played well over the two-year WTC cycle but their preparation for the final was far from ideal.

Quarantine restrictions allowed India to play only one intra-squad game before the marquee clash against a well prepared New Zealand.

“I enjoyed watching Test cricket over this cycle. India did extremely well over this cycle but what cost them in the final was their poor preparation. They went into such a game without any practice games.

“New Zealand on the other hand were match fit having already played two games (against England),” he told PTI on Friday.

The players have a three-week break before they reassemble in the UK on July 14 for the five Tests against England beginning in Nottingham from August 4. The scheduling has left Vengsarkar amazed.

It must be mentioned that the six-week break between WTC final and first England Test is due to travel restrictions and COVID-19 protocols for any Indian traveller going to the UK.

“I don’t know how we approach this kind of an itinerary. Where you go for a holiday in between and then come back to play Test matches. One week break was enough post the WTC final. The thing is you need to play continuously. I am amazed this itinerary was approved.”

Skipper Kohli had spoken about the need for the batsmen to show more intent for scoring runs when conditions are tough for batting like they were in Southampton.

Vengsarkar said the Kohli and Co should have also shown intent in their preparation.

“If he is talking about intent, then why didn’t the team prepare properly for this match? Where was the intent then? They should have played at least two four-day games.

“You want to know whether the players are match fit or not by playing those games. The fast bowers will know what lengths to hit straightway only in those practice games.”

Vengsarkar said India announced the best available playing eleven two days before the game despite having the option to play an extra seamer when play began in the rain hit game.

“You see, we had beaten Australia with a similar combination more or less. It was the best team they picked under the circumstances. Whether you announce it on the day of the game or day before it doesn’t make much difference. You have an idea about the conditions anyway.”

India missed a fast bowling all-rounder in the eleven and played two specialist spinners, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, also because of their batting abilities.

With Hardik Pandya not fit enough to bowl regularly in the format, the selectors ignored him for the UK tour. ”

“If he is not available then you think about somebody who is available. In cricket, nobody is indispensable.

Unfortunately, BCCI doesn’t have a proper talent spotting team. They should pick someone from the U-19 level and groom him,” said Vengsarkar, who was the chairman of BCCI’s Talent Research & Development Organization (TRDO).

India are yet to win an ICC title under Kohli’s leadership and that remains a mystery for Vengsarkar.

“To be honest, beating Australia earlier this year was a great achievement. I give lot of importance to such wins. This WTC they just started, I don’t know how long they would continue with it.

“I feel if you play in countries like England, you should play best of three games to know where the team stands. Because after this Test, if we have had two more games, the outcome of the final could have been different with India having already played a game.

“I don’t know why they are not able to (win an ICC title). They have the combination and the players do it.”For the moment, Vengsarkar also doesn’t see any merit in the split captaincy debate.

“If Virat is good enough to play in all formats which he very much is, than he should continue leading the side. He should only be replaced if he doesn’t merit a place in the side.

“ODI captain playing under Test captain and vice versa, I dont believe in that. If Joe Root is playing under Morgan in ODIs, I don’t agree with that because he is also good enough to lead that side,” the 65-year-old added.
