Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation through his monthly radio programme Mann ki Baat on Sunday. It was the 78th episode of the radio show streamed on the PM's official YouTube channel.

Modi condoled Milkha Singh's recent passing, talking about his dedication to the world of sports. Furthermore, the PM talked about India's place at the Olympics, asking the youth to take part in such international competitions.

"When talking about the Olympics, how can we not remember Milkha Singh Ji. When he was hospitalised, I got a chance to speak to him, I had requested him to motivate the athletes going for Tokyo Olympics," said Modi.

Modi urged India to motivate and cheer for the sportspersons representing the country at the Tokyo Olympics.

"Pravin Jadhav of Satara district in Maharastra is an outstanding archer. His parents work as labourers and now Jadhav is going to participate in his first Olympics in Tokyo," he said.

"Every player going to Tokyo has had one’s own share of struggle, and years of toil. They are going not only for themselves but for the country. Friends, there are numerous such names, but in Mann Ki Baat, today I have been able to mention only a few," said Modi.

Modi also spoke about India’s vaccine hesitancy, talking to two people from Dulariya village, Betul district, Madhya Pradesh who have been 'made to fear vaccination by those spreading misinformation'. He alleviated these concerns pointing to the 30 crore Indians who have been safely and successfully vaccinated, including the PM's own 100-year-old mother.

"Those who are spreading rumours on vaccines, let them be. We all will do our work and ensure people around us get vaccinated. The threat of COVID-19 remains and we have to focus on vaccination as well as follow COVID-19 protocols," he explained.

Modi urge to the country to trust science and scientists. "So many people have taken the vaccine. Let us never believe on negative rumours relating to the vaccine," he added.

"Please get rid of fear. Sometimes people may get a fever but it is very mild and lasts only for a few hours. Avoiding vaccine can be very dangerous. You’re not only putting yourself at risk but also your family and the entire village."

In the new phase of the largest vaccination drive in the world, vaccines are being made available for free across states and Union territories.

"The battle we the countrymen are fighting against COVID-19 is continuing… but in this fight, together, we've achieved many an extraordinary milestone! Just a few days ago, our country accomplished an unprecedented feat [vaccinating over eight million in one day]," said Modi.
