Gothenburg, Sweden
Polestar, a
Swedish electric car major, has announced that it will be manufacturing its
first electric Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) in Ridgeville, South Carolina, USA.
The company will be using a Volvo Cars facility that was opened in 2018.
Polestar has ties with both Volvo and Geely Holding.
Polestar 3 will
be an aerodynamic SUV that will showcase the next evolution of Polestar’s
design. The new car will also have the native Android Automotive operating
system, which was first debuted in Polestar 2.
Dennis Nobelius,
Chief Operating Officer, Polestar mentioned that producing the new Polestar 3
in the US will have many advantages for the company such as making procurement
more efficient and reducing the delivery time to customers. It will also have a
positive impact on the price of the Polestar 3 SUV. He added that this move
will make the brand more competitive in the critical American sales market.
Thomas
Ingenlath, Chief Executive Officer, Polestar said that he was happy to launch
Polestar’s first SUV that will be manufactured in South Carolina. He added that
Polestar 3 will be built in America, for American customers. With this decision
by the company, the US will no longer be just an export market but a home
market for the brand.
U.S. and China have been the two largest single markets
for electric vehicles. This expansion decision by Polestar isn’t just about the
product line. It’s also about having an American retail presence. With this
move, Polestar spaces will be seen in 25 locations throughout 2021.
The Sweden
headquartered company has a dedicated research and development (R&D)
facility in the UK. Polestar vehicles are produced in both China and the US.
The Polestar vision is to go where they can best realise their idea of
design-led, sustainable, electric performance and not be restricted by
geography.
