A 29-year-old woman's life was saved by the doctors at the Sion hospital after a 2.5 feet iron rod passed through her chest while working at the construction site in Vikhroli on June 19. According to the doctors, she was first taken to the Rajawadi hospital but later was shifted to the ICU at Sion hospital for further treatment. Following this, three-hour-long surgery was conducted on the patient. Treating doctors said none of the vital organs of the patient was damaged except the right lung which was also repaired. The patient is now stable and will be discharged in the next three days.
Dr Mohan Joshi, dean, Sion hospital said the incident occurred at the construction site on June 19 when both husband and wife were working at the site. One of the workers was downstairs doing her assigned construction work. While doing this, an iron rod fell from the upper floor at around 3 pm, unfortunately, it penetrated the woman's chest.
“The woman was rushed to Rajawadi hospital where sedation was given and was later shifted to the Sion hospital for the surgery,” he said. A team of 12 people including specialist doctors, nurses and ward boys from three departments of the hospital was working tirelessly for the operation.
Dr Ranjeet Kamble from the surgery department of the Sion hospital said the patient's condition was critical following which they had to perform ‘thoracic excursions surgery’ for removal of iron rod from the chest. Moreover, her right lung was damaged which was treated after they removed the iron rod.
“Considering the very serious condition of the patient, we decided to perform surgery immediately. However, it was not possible for her to sleep on the bed in the operating theater as an iron rod had penetrated through her chest. After much effort, the woman was placed on a cushion and the surgery was performed. It was the most difficult surgery, which lasted for 3 hours,” Dr Kamble.
Dr Kamble further added, “The patient is completely stable and is ready to discharge in the next two to three days.”
