MORIGAON, June 26: Labanya Hazarika, a Nagaon based noted woman as well as the member of POHAR participated in the 47th zoom meeting of the human rights commission of the Rastra Sangha and delivered a speech on lockdown situation recently.
Labanya Hazarika spoke on the topic “How some Indians were forced to vacate the rented rooms and they were involuntarily living in the parks.”
“Women gave birth to children in the parks after being turned away by the multiple hospitals and remain uncertain if they would ever have homes. Indian government had failed to ensure any arrangements for such families. India is the largest democracy in the world, but it is unable to provide shelter to its people. Covid-19 has reflected the weaknesses of the Indian state. It has shown how people are treated in India. During this earth-shaking pandemic, women and children should not be forgotten. They are at the target of human rights abuses, suffering more than others from violence carried out during lockdowns. India must reconsider and redesign its policies and must seek technical cooperation from OHCHR in this regard and ensure provision of basic housing facilities to its people,” she said.
