The Supreme Court on Thursday asked all state education boards that have cancelled Class XII exams due to the Covid-19 pandemic to notify their respective schemes for evaluation of students in 10 days and declare the internal assessment results by July 31.
Not endorsing validity
We are not endorsing the correctness and validity of the proposed schemes, to be so formulated by the boards concerned. That will be considered on its own merits, if and when the occasion arises. — SC Bench
A Bench led by Justice AM Khanwilkar, which dismissed petitions against CBSE/CISCE evaluation schemes on June 22, said it was impossible to have a uniform evaluation scheme for all state boards.
Hearing petitions seeking cancellation of state board examinations for Class XII, Haryana Government counsel said the state education boards were autonomous bodies and they should be given the freedom to formulate their own assessment schemes.
“We have no difficulty in acceding to this submission,” the Bench said, adding that each board was free to formulate its own evaluation criteria and there couldn’t be a “fit-all” scheme.
However, it said, “We are not endorsing the correctness and validity of the proposed schemes, to be so formulated by the boards concerned. That will be considered on its own merits, if and when the occasion arises.”
The Bench said the evaluation schemes must provide for a proper grievance redressal mechanism for the students after the declaration of results.
