It is the need of the hour to be online, especially for educational institutions. With no certainty about when things will go back to normal, many boards across the country have resorted to conducting not only online classes but also taking online examinations. And as convenient it is for the students, it is as much, if not more, difficult for the boards to conduct these exams. And if they’re going to go heavy on technology, then we all should be ready for glitches, shouldn’t we? One of the glitches that came to light was by Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB). Recently, BSEB issued a score sheet to a male candidate who had a picture of a South Indian actress. They are also being ridiculed by the public for irregularities in the Secondary Teachers’ Eligibility Test (STET) merit list.
Rishikesh Kumar, a candidate from Jehanabad, was allowed to qualify in the teachers’ recruitment test but was still not included in the merit list. And this is just not one candidate; hundreds of candidates have faced the same issue, which has led them to question the board’s criteria for inclusion in the merit list.
But the problem for Rishikesh Kumar doesn’t end there. His result sheet was issued with the picture of a Telugu and Malayalam actress, Anupama Parameswaran. This incident was enough for social media to start trolling the board regarding their careless behaviour towards the exams.
Kumar had also faced the same issue with his admit card and that is when he filed a complaint against the board last year. After this, the board sought photo correction in January last year. But with the same photo in the result sheet this year, it is clear that it was not effective.
When the BSEB was questioned, one of the officials said that “We are looking into the matter. It seems the error was committed by the computer operator.” He also added that, “The board instructs all candidates to carry their photo-attached identity proof like Aadhar card, driving license, bank passbook, passport, etc at exam centers. In case of any mistake or mismatch, we allow students to take the exam after verifying their details.”
While the chairman of BSEB refused to comment on the topic, Tejashwi Yadav, the leader of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), in a tweet on Thursday remembered a similar scam that took place where Sunny Leone, a Bollywood actor, was named the topper in a draft merit list in 2019. He tweeted saying “After Sunny Leone topped in the junior engineering exam, now Anupama Parameswaran has passed the state STET exam. With scams in every exam and recruitment process, Nitish ji is destroying the future of millions of youth. He takes one decade to complete one recruitment process that is too riddled with a scam.”
Mistakes are a part of life and committing them once or twice is acceptable. But mistakes shouldn’t be confused with careless and negligent behaviour. The boards across the country have taken the online examinations too lightly. They have been careless and unresponsive towards the same.
We need them to realize that a lot of student’s careers rely on these tests and not everyone can afford to reappear for these exams. The board needs to get out of their heads and deal with such situations better and take more precautions when conducting online examinations.
