Ordering custom rugs often seems as intimidating as having a color expert find just the right shade of gamboge for your kitchen—dreamy, luxurious, and, for most of us, not feasible. But, luckily, more designers are lifting the lid on the customization process. Designers who often work with architects and interior designers, like Federica Tondato of New York, and Athens-based Fedora Rugs, are often willing to work with a customer on a unique piece—in the case of Fedora Designs, that can be as small as a doormat now and then. Additionally, both larger rug brands like mainstay The Rug Company and up-and-coming design studios such as Beni Rugs allow you to zhuzh your floors with a piece to your exact liking. Sëbou x Eton
Spanish shirting brand Eton’s collaboration with Scandinavian rug company Sëbou makes for the ideal symbiotic relationship: The collection uses fabric scraps from Eton’s manufacturing. Eton’s fabric rolls, each Egyptian cotton, woven in Italian and Swiss mills, can contain up to 1,000 color and pattern combinations—making for rugs that range from pastel to psychedelic. Beni Rugs
“We founded the company because we couldn’t find Moroccan rugs in the sizes and colors required by modern interiors,” says designer Robert Wright of Beni, the Morccan rug company he cofounded with Tiberio Lobo-Navia. Since its inception, Beni rugs have been customizable in size and color: Choose among shades that include azure, saffron, or tangerine, or opt for neutrals.
The studio’s 11-piece collaboration with stylist and designer Colin King, full of the rich clay, bone, and navy tones that King speckles throughout his work, is also customizable—just ask. “We frequently have customers make custom color requests for the Colin King collection, which we’re happy to accommodate,” says Wright.

A freshly launched custom rug designer tool on The Rug Company’s site allows you to tweak 100-plus rugs to your exact color, shape, and size whims. If that’s not quite enough customization, the brand’s bespoke service, which begins with a consultation with a designer before designs are pitched, approved, and woven in Nepal, means possibilities are limitless.

Fedora Designs
Designer Federica Tondato might be beloved for her statement-sized rugs and their oversized abstract patterns—but she’s willing to go small for the right client. “I’ve done a few rugs that are just 2"x3" for a client who loved my work but didn’t have the space or resources for a bigger piece,” she says. Her rugs, which are made in Nepal, India, or across Europe, depending on the technique called for (Tondato is known for her hand-knotted pieces as much as her embroidered ones), start at $1,000 per square meter. Sometimes a client has a very clear idea of what they are after, but more often than not, they trust Tondato’s vision. “If I have access to the space, it becomes a bit like painting a portrait; it’s a very easy, intuitive process,” she says.
