Palghar, Jun 24 (UNI) At least five accused who were indulging in illegal dredging activities in the Vaitarna bridge river in Palghar district escaped during the raids conducted by the local revenue and police officials the district rural police said on Thursday.
The PRO of the Palghar police Sachin Navadkar told this correspondent that consequent upon the ban order on dredging near the Vaitarna river the police and revenue department kept a vigil in the belt.
It was on Wednesday the two department officials in plain cloths carried out the raid at the locations where the dredging was being done.
Upon seeing the raiding party and anticipating action the occupants of the three boats used for dredging and collection of sand abandoned the boats in bushes and fled the scene the police said.
The police seized the stock of sand worth Rs. 20.48 lakhs from the three boats.
Offences under various sections of the IPC and also Environment act have been registered against the accused with the Kelva coastal police station the police said.
