Srinagar, Jun 25 (UNI) An unidentified militant was killed by security forces in an encounter during which another ultra belonging to the Lashkher-e-Toiba (LeT) surrendered in south Kashmir district of Shopian on Friday, a police spokesman said this evening.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir range, Vijay Kumar has reiterated his appeal to the local militants to surrender and join the mainstream and lead a normal life again.
The spokesman said following specific information about the presence of militants, a joint cordon and search operation (CASO) was launched by Special Operations Group (SOG) of J&K police, Army and CRPF at Hanjipora in Shopian on Friday.
He said when security forces were moving towards a particular area, militants hiding there, fired at them with automatic weapons. “The security forces retaliated ensuing in an encounter,” he said, adding a militant was killed in the exchange of fire.
He said another militant of the Lashkher-e-Toiba (LeT) surrendered along with one AK 56 rifle during the live encounter.
He said the operation was going on when the reports last came in.
IGP in a tweet said “IGP Kashmir once again reiterates his #appeal to all #misguided youth who have joined #terror folds to shun the path of violence & #return to mainstream. He also said that Police is #committed to accept them with open arms as society needs them the most especially their #parents.”
Over half a dozen militants have so far surrendered during live encounters in the Kashmir valley this year.
