Copa America: Paraguay book their place in the quarter finals after a victory against Chile

Miguel Almiron got a goal and an assist as Paraguay beat Chile 2-0 in the Copa America on Thursday and confirmed their place in the last eight.

Paraguay gets their third consecutive win against Chile, their longest active streak against any CONMEBOL team for them. Paraguay can go into the final matchday topping their group with a win over Uruguay and Bolivia does them a favour by either defeating to drawing Argentina.

Paraguay showed immense composure against a lacklustre Chile as they won their third consecutive win against the same opponent in the CONMEBOL fixture. Paraguay turned around their form following their loss to Argentina with better attitude and energy from the players overall by feeling much more comfortable.

Braian Samudio and Miguel Almiron scoring saw Paraguay upstage two-time champions Chile in their second last Group A fixture in Brasilia en route to the knockout round. Paraguay was handed a lead in the 33rd-minute at Estadio Nacional de Brasilia as Samudio scored a maiden international goal for his country through a brilliant corner kick taken by Almiron. The Newcastle forward then went on to score with a penalty 13 minutes into the second half.

Chile struggled to take control of the game as they tried to maintain their unbeaten start under manager Martin Lasarte. Eduardo Vargas and Ben Brereton were helpless as Chile managed just one shot on goal in the whole duration of the game at times struggling to get out of their own half.

However, Paraguay’s victory celebrations were dampened as substitute Antonio Bareiro left the field on a stretcher following what appeared to be a serious knee injury.
