Twitter India Managing Director Manish Maheshwari today gave a miss to the summons by the UP Police for “personal appearance” in a case related to a social media post linked to the assault of a Muslim man in Ghaziabad’s Loni, after he got relief from the Karnataka High Court, which said if Ghaziabad Police wanted to examine him then it could do so through virtual mode.

Maheshwari was supposed to appear before the UP Police at Loni police station in Ghaziabad today.

The Twitter India through it lawyers had conveyed to the police that Maheshwari was available for questioning via video call but the cops sent fresh summons on Tuesday, asking him to appear before it.

“Clarification given by you is inappropriate. Being the MD of Twitter in India, you are the representative of the company. Therefore, you are bound by the Indian law to cooperate in the investigation,” the police had said in its notice.

Meanwhile, Maheshwari approached the Karnataka High Court, which granted him interim relief and directed the UP Police not to take any coercive steps against him till the next date of hearing on June 29 in connection with its probe into the case.

The High Court was hearing Maheshwari’s petition against a notice issued by the UP Police under Section 41A of the CrPC, asking him to appear before the police, agencies reported from Bengaluru. (With inputs from agencies)
