Bangladesh reports second highest single day COVID 19 deaths

The COVID 19 situation in Bangladesh continued to remain grim with 108 deaths being reported in the country on Friday. This is the second highest daily death toll since the first corona positive case was reported in Bangladesh in March last year. The highest number of deaths in a day was reported on April 19 this year with a figure of 112. The death toll has now gone up to 13,976.

During the same period, 5869 new cases of Corona infection were also reported in the country taking the total number of infected persons to more than 8.78 lakh. However, the number of active cases in the country is 67,269.

The sample positivity rate also went up on Friday. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in its latest press release put the positivity rate on Friday at 21.22 which was 19.93 percent on the previous day.

Earlier, the National COVID 19 advisory committee had recommended a two week long complete lockdown in the country to contain the spread of the virus. The World Health Organisation in its status report for the week of June 14-20 pointed out that close to 2/3 of all the districts in Bangladesh fall in the very high risk category of COVID infection with sample positivity rate of more than 10 percent.
