Authorities have retrieved the bodies of two men after their hired plane crashed into a stand of trees north of Brisbane.
Investigators will comb through the wreckage of the two-seater plane, manufactured in 1976, to determine if a mechanical failure brought it down in a field 50 metres from a road north of Brisbane.
Police say the Cessna A150 Aerobat is registered to the Sunshine Coast Aero Club which operates a flying school but would not say if was a training flight.
The men set off from the Sunshine Coast Airport at 11am on Wednesday on what should have been a three-hour flight, but failed to return.

Hours later the shattered plane was found just off Commissioners Flat Road between Peachester and Cedarton, 40km from the airport. Both men died at the scene.
'It's a tragic outcome for two people and their families, terrible,' Inspector Jason Overland told reporters on Thursday.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating the cause of the crash, and described both men as pilots.
It has appealed for help from any witnesses who saw the plane during any phase of its final flight.
Four safety investigators will examine the wreckage and crash site, and will review any recorded communications and the plane's maintenance records.
