As a practical person concerned with results, and as an American appalled by the brutalization of our society, I strongly second President Biden’s call for more than prayerful handwringing (“Biden crime prevention strategy to focus on guns, hiring more cops,” Web, June 23).

Let’s ban the sale of assault weapons, megamagazines, silencers and anything else that facilitates mass murder, and let’s toughen the obstacles that must be hurdled on the way to gun ownership.

But here’s the rub: What do we do about the millions of assault rifles legally owned at present? Let’s not forget that Chicago has very restrictive gun laws and yet reigns as the murder capital of our fair land.

We must recognize that we cannot lockdown every school, every hospital, every nursing home, every soft target — just as we cannot lockup every mentally disturbed person.
