Castlemartyr’s John O’Brien was all smiles at Tipperary Golf Club after he captured the 2021 Munster Senior Men’s Amateur Open Championship.

He opened with a one-under par 71 to trail Castlerock’s David Mulholland and Shandon Park’s Philip Purdy by one stroke but then closed with a bogey-free, three-under 69 to win by four strokes from Purdy and Banbridge’s Jim Carvill on four-under par.

In the 50-54 section, Kinsale’s Kieran McCarthy was victorious on one-over 145, closing with a best of the week, five-under 67 to finish fourth overall, two shots clear of Cairndhu’s Brian Galway.

Cork’s Pat Lyons won the 60-64 section with a score of 151 after rounds of 74 and 77, edging out Kinsale’s Jerry Crean and Carton House’s Alan Egan by one stroke.

Amongst the over 65s, Portmarnock’s Adrian Morrow showed he’s still a force as he recovered from a 79 with a 73 to win on a countback from Cork’s Tom Cleary (77-75) on 152.
