Andy Murray to defend gold medal in Tokyo
Two-time Olympic gold medalist Andy Murray will defend his title in Tokyo this summer.
The 34-year-old former World No. 1 was named to Great Britain's squad for the Summer Games on Thursday.
Murray, the singles champion in 2012 in London and 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, will compete in singles and partner with Joe Salisbury in doubles.
"The Olympics means a huge amount to me, it's a massive honor to be able to compete at a fourth Games," Murray said. "Leading Team GB out at the opening ceremony five years ago in Rio was one of the highlights of my career. Going to an Olympics as defending champion is exciting and I'm looking forward to the challenge."
Murray is currently ranked No. 119 in the world.
The three-time Grand Slam winner had hip surgery in 2018 and has only competed in three ATP Tour events in 2021, compiling a 2-3 record.
The rest of the British tennis squad headed to Japan includes Dan Evans, Neal Skupski, Johanna Konta and Heather Watson.
