What to wear this weekend: FEMAIL picks out the best summer blazers for effortless style this season

KEEP IT LIGHT

Dressing for the weather in a British summer means layering. Whether it’s paired with a dress, skirt or trousers, a light blazer is a hard-working essential, ready to smarten you up or keep the drizzle at bay. Avoid navy or black — too reminiscent of winter — and keep it light in colour for a fresh look.

This season, it’s all about keeping your jacket longer in length and making it oversized. Opt for double-breasted to get a polished finish, as I have done here with this Reiss version, or single-breasted if you prefer a more relaxed shape.

STAY SHARP

Keep your tailoring sharp — this summer, blazers may be bigger than they have been for a few years, but that doesn’t mean shapeless.

A good cut will still draw the waist in when done up. I saw plenty of great examples at Royal Ascot last week teamed with wide-leg trousers, and this chic look would work just as well at the office.

BRIGHT AND BREEZY

I love the versatility a neutral blazer gives, balancing out my bright skirt here or blending in with other basics such as jeans. But if you’re brave, you could go for a pop of colour — Balmain showed a neon version with oversized shoulder pads on the catwalk.

SPLASH OUT

It’s worth spending more, as a little extra will often result in a blazer that fits better over the bust and hips. You want it to skim, not strain at the buttons. It’s also worth splashing out on a blazer with longevity given the enduring love affair fashion has with this item of clothing — it really won’t date.

The silk version from Winser London (below) slips over a party outfit and hangs beautifully, but if you’re on a budget, Zara’s tuxedo (also below) is still bang on trend.
