A two-member gang entered 7 different State Bank of India (SBI) ATMs in Chennai and stole cash worth more than Rs 35 lakh in a very clever way from these cash deposit machines.
A startling incident of ATM theft has surfaced from Chennai which has surprised even the bank management and police. A two-member gang entered 7 different State Bank of India (SBI) ATMs in Chennai and stole cash worth more than Rs 35 lakh in a very clever way from these cash deposit machines.
The gang managed to find a technical glitch in a particular kind of Japan-made machines. The robbers allegedly blocked a sensor in the machine by using a finger or a device. The thieves blocked the sensor meant to detect the cash collection and the cash withdrawal section got choked and stopped there.
Like once you enter your PIN to withdraw money and the machine gives the money, the customer has to take it within a certain period (20 seconds). If this is not done, the machine pulls back the money but the robbers quickly removed the cash but the machine will show it has been deposited back. They repeated this several times one by one and the money came out of the machine but it did not come in the record.
Chennai Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal has said that a gang from another state is involved in the robbery of the SBI ATM after the news of the theft came to light.
He said that in the last three days 7 ATM thefts have been reported. Scrutiny of CCTV camera footage revealed that lakhs of rupees have been stolen from the machine by unknown thieves. Search is on for the accused based on the footage of the CCTV camera. An additional commissioner of police is leading the investigation in the case.
