The progress of monsoon into Delhi and parts of Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab is "unlikely" during the next seven days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on June 22.
"Southwest monsoon has so far covered most parts of the country except parts of Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana and Punjab," news agency PTI quoted the weather department as saying.
"The salient feature of the monsoon in 2021 is its progress to eastern, central and adjoining northwest India earlier than normal (up to 7-10 days). However, further progress over the remaining parts of the country is unlikely during the next seven days," IMD said.
Light rainfall is likely in the National Capital Region around June 26 but the region will have to wait for monsoonal showers, PTI quoted Kuldeep Srivastava, the head of the IMD's regional forecasting centre, as saying.
Excess rainfall
India has received 37 percent excess rainfall during the season so far, the IMD said on June 22.
> The weather department said that northwest India has received 71.3 mm rainfall against the normal of 40.6 mm rainfall during the period, a surplus of 76 percent.
> Central India has registered 145.8 mm rainfall against the normal of 92.2 mm, an increase of 58 percent.
Earlier, the IMD forecast that the wind system might reach Delhi by June 15.
Normally, the monsoon reaches Delhi by June 27 and covers the entire country by July 8.
The southwest monsoon reaches western Rajasthan by the first week of July. The region is also its last outpost in the country to cover. It reaches northwest Rajasthan late and also withdraws from there early. The southwest monsoon made an onset over Kerala on June 3, two days after its normal date. But then it made rapid progress covering many parts of east, west, south, and central India before the normal date.
Prohibitory orders in Maharashtra's districts
Meanwhile, the Mira Bhayander Vasai Virar (MBVV) police on June 22 issued prohibitory orders under section 144 of CrPC around water bodies and at picnic spots in its jurisdiction in Maharashtra's Thane and Palghar districts in view of the monsoon.
The order, which will be effective till August 18, bans the gathering of people within a one-kilometre radius of dams, rivers, lakes, etc. and prohibits activities like swimming, taking selfies, playing music and stopping of vehicles at such places.
