Thousands of women discover they've been wearing earrings the 'wrong' way for YEARS - but not everyone agrees

  • Thousands of women have been left shocked over advice on how to wear studs
  • A meme showed the plastic ring is supposed to be snapped off before use
  • However it has divided opinions with jewellers saying the ring should be kept on

Thousands of women have realised they may have been wearing their earrings the wrong way for years after a meme went viral.

The meme showed the 'correct' way to wear studs that come attached to a clear plastic ring.

Most women commenting on the post said they always treated the clear ring as part of the jewellery.

But the meme explained the plastic should always be snapped off before the earring is used.

Thousands of women commented on the revelation, with some embarrassed that they've been wearing earrings with the plastic kept on for so long.

'Oh this makes sense, is that why my earrings always seem crooked?' one woman said on the post.

'Really? I didn't know that and I am 74,' another woman said in disbelief.

Others 'found out they should take the plastic off' by accident.

'When this first happened to me I thought I had broken my earring, then I realised it was supposed to come off easily,'  a woman said.

But others revealed they would continue to wear earrings with the plastic attached.

'I feel more secure with it in place,' a commenter admitted.

'I feel like it helps the earring sit higher and more snug,' agreed another.

And some, including a jeweller, said the information in the meme simply wasn't true.

'My hubby is a jeweller, they don't normally come off to his knowledge - they are there for extra strength,' one woman said.

'This is false, the plastic is there to help support heavier earrings so they sit against the ear nicely,' one woman said.

'No, keep them on. They are there for a reason and that is to stabilise the earring if it is a bit larger or heavy. It supports the earring against the rear of your earlobe,' added another.
