A day after rats nibbled the left eye of the 24-year-old, Sriniva Yellapa, a bed-ridden patient at the Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar, the patient succumbed to the injuries on Wednesday night. Doctors said the patient was suffering from alcoholic liver disease and was in very critical condition since the day of admission.

Alcohol-related liver disease (ARLD) is caused by damage to the liver from years of excessive drinking. Years of alcohol abuse can cause the liver to become inflamed and swollen. This damage can also cause scarring known as cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is the final stage of liver disease.

Srinivas Yellapa, a 24-year-old patient, was admitted to the hospital following respiratory issues. After being admitted to the hospital, he was also diagnosed with brain and liver damage and was then shifted to the ICU.

Dr Vidya Thakur, dean, Rajawadi Hospital said the patient was very serious and was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state. Following which they admitted him to the ICU and started the treatment. Moreover their family members were aware of his health condition. “He was suffering from ARLD and all health parameters were unstable due to which he was on a ventilator constantly. Moreover his haemoglobin was around 1. All the necessary treatment was given to the patient, but he had his last breath on Wednesday night,” she said.

Meanwhile, on midnight of June 21 , a rat had eaten the left eye of the patient following which he had sustained superficial injuries. Following which the civic body had ordered internal investigations.
