ANALYSIS/OPINION:
Under the Constitution, all public bodies consisting of public servants sit for the citizens who attend public meetings. These meetings function for the purpose of serving the citizens (“Parents sue school board over racial-bias program, free-speech concerns,” Web, June 3).
Remember, public servants do not exercise any constitutional rights in the official performance of their duties — but the citizens in the audience do, and therefore the citizens control the meeting. Long ago when the colonists sought redress from the king, the king refused to hear their remonstrances. He “dismissed” the “meeting” with the colonists.
Under the Constitution, the citizens are the sovereigns and thus they control all public assemblies.
The Loudoun County School Board had no authority to end public interaction with the board.
