- A week-old baby went missing from a shopping mall in Klerksdorp six days ago.
- The woman suspected of kidnapping her met the baby's mother at Klerksdorp Hospital and offered to buy her takkies.
- When the teenager returned from buying the takkies, the woman and her baby were missing.
Police are searching for a woman who pretended to be a good Samaritan but kidnapped a week-old baby at a Klerksdorp shopping centre instead.
The search for the missing infant is also continuing, six days after the incident.
But, according to police, there are no leads yet.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani said the 17-year-old mother had given birth at home on Monday, 14 June.
"The baby was subsequently admitted to Klerksdorp Hospital on Thursday morning, 17 June 2021, for a check-up and discharged at 14:00," she said.
"The mother was leaving the hospital when she met a woman who [offered] to buy her takkies as she was wearing flip-flops … on a cold day. Reports suggest that the … mother allegedly went to the mall with the woman who gave her money to buy herself takkies, whilst she remained behind to look after the newborn baby girl."
When the teenager came out of the shop, the woman was missing as well as the baby.
The young mother reported the matter to the police and a kidnapping case was registered.
"The suspect speaks Setswana, is 1.65m tall and was wearing black jeans with a black and pink top," Funani said.
She is believed to be in her early 30s.
No photos of the child are available.
