Automotive diode specialist Actron Technology has expanded its offerings to include SiC MOSFETs for electrical vehicles (EV), which are expected to obtain certification from first-tier car vendors in Europe in the third quarter of the year, according to market sources.

This will make Actron, an affiliate of SAS (Sino-American Products) Group, the first Taiwan diode maker to have SiC MOSFET validated by international automakers, further firming its presence in the EV power components segment, the sources said. The company has already ventured its IGBT solutions into the EV sector.

SiC MOSFET, though 10 times higher than IGBT in cost, are increasingly adopted by automakers to power motor drive inverters of up to 1,200 volts thanks to its excellent performance in high-frequency and high-temperature environments, the sources continued.

Actron, with over 95% of revenues from automotive applications, is now the world's largest supplier of internal combustion engine (ICE) diodes for oil-fueled cars, with a global market share of 50% in the segment, the sources noted.

The company's shipments of low-loss diode (LLD) to automotive clients in Europe have grown to account for 30% of Actron's revenues so far this year, thanks to clients accelerating the use of such diodes to reduce emissions, the sources revealed, estimating its second-quarter revenues will surge 70% on year.
