New Delhi, June 21

The Supreme Court on Monday reserved its verdict on PILs seeking an ex gratia compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the kin of Covid victims.

After hearing Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, senior advocate SB Upadhyay and others, a Bench of Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice MR Shah asked the parties to file written submissions in three days and reserved its order.

The Centre had earlier maintained that giving Rs 4 lakh each to kin of victims wasn’t possible due to limited resources as it would affect pandemic response on other aspects.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta today said it was not the case that the government had no funds. “The question is how to utilise the funds,” he said. — TNS
