Mets put RHP Robert Gsellman (lat strain) on IL, activate 2B Jeff McNeil

New York Mets right-hander Robert Gsellman is headed to the 10-day injured list with a right lat strain, with SNY reporting Monday that the lat is actually torn and he could be out six-to-eight weeks.

The move was announced before the team's doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves. In addition, the Mets activated second baseman Jeff McNeil from IL after he missed just more than a month with a hamstring injury.

Gsellman, 27, last pitched on Saturday when he allowed a run on three hits in a two-inning start in the second game of a doubleheader at Washington. He took the loss in the Nationals' 6-2 win.

He is 0-1 with a 3.71 ERA in 15 games (one start) this season, with 15 strikeouts and seven walks in 26 2/3 innings.

Gsellman, who missed most of last season with a triceps injury, is 20-16 with a 4.59 ERA in 174 games (34 starts) since debuting with the Mets in 2016.

McNeil, 29, last played on May 16 against the Tampa Bay Rays when both he and outfielder Michael Conforto suffered hamstring injuries early in the game. McNeil has missed New York's past 31 games, and has played five games while rehabbing with Class-A Brooklyn and Triple-A Syracuse.

Entering Monday, McNeil had produced a .242/.336/.374 line with three homers and 13 runs scored in 31 games this season. He singled as a pinch hitter in Game 1 of the Mets' doubleheader.

McNeil has hit .300 or better in each of his three previous seasons, earning his lone All-Star berth in 2019.
