Pfizer in final stages to get approval in India: CEO

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said that the Pfizer Covid vaccine is now in final stages to get approval for use in India. 'I hope very soon we will finalize an agreement with the government,' he said, news agency ANI reported.

"We are discussing with India govt, we are in final stages of finalising agreement," Bourla said at the 15th annual BioPharma & Healthcare Summit, USA-India Chamber of Commerce (USAIC)

"We need to get approval of this vaccine in India. We are in a good way to get approval. Then we have to have a sign an agreement that will allow us to send doses," Bourla said. Bourla said that Pfizer will be able to produce 3 billion vaccines by the end of 2021, and 4 billion vaccines in 2022.

Centre alerts Maharashtra, MP and Kerala over Delta Plus variant being found in some districts

Based on the recent findings of INSACOG,a consortium of labs, the Union health ministry has alerted and advised Maharashtra, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh regarding the Delta Plus variant of COVID-19 being found in some districts in these states, the ministry said.

The Union health secretary has communicated to these three states that this variant has been found in genome sequenced samples from Ratnagiri and Jalgaon districts of Maharashtra; Palakkad and Pathanamthitta districts in Kerala, and Bhopal and Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh, the ministry said. The INSACOG has informed that Delta Plus, currently a variant of concern, has increased transmissibility, stronger binding to receptors of lung cells, potential reduction in monoclonal antibody response, the ministry said, adding that three states  have been advised to take up immediate containment measures in the districts and clusters including preventing crowds and intermingling of people, widespread testing, prompt tracing as well as vaccine coverage on a priority basis.

Mumbai records 570 new cases, 10 fatalities

 
Mumbai reported 570 new coronavirus infections and 10 fatalities on Tuesday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. With this, the tally of cases rose to 7,22,461 and the toll increased to 15,315, it said.  There are 14,453 active COVID-19 cases in the city. With 742 patients discharged from hospitals during the day, the total of recovered patients rose to 6,90,417.On Monday, the financial capital of the country had recorded 521 new cases and seven deaths.
  
So far 68,73,621 COVID-19 tests have been conducted in the city including 32,307 in the last 24 hours. The rate of recovery in the city is 95 percent, while the average growth rate of cases between June 15 and June 21 was 0.9 percent.

Delhi records 134 new COVID-19 cases, 8 fatalities

Delhi recorded 134 coronavirus cases on Tuesday with a positivity rate of 0.20 percent, while eight more people succumbed to the disease, according to data shared by the city's health department here.

According to the bulletin, 263 cases of previous weeks were added on the ICMR portal by Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and associated Safdarjung Hospital on Monday.

Mumbai reports 570 COVID-19 cases, 10 deaths

Mumbai reported 570 new coronavirus infections and 10 fatalities on Tuesday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. With this, the tally of cases rose to 7,22,461 and toll increased to 15,315, it said.

On Monday, the financial capital of the country had recorded 521 new cases and seven deaths. There are 14,453 active COVID-19 cases in the city. With 742 patients discharged from hospitals during the day, the total of recovered patients rose to 6,90,417.

Kerala logs 12,617 new COVID-19 cases, 141 deaths

Kerala added 12,617 fresh COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, taking the caseload to 28,29,510, while 141 more deaths pushed the toll to 12,295, the state government said. As many as 11,730 people recovered from the disease, taking the overall recoveries to 27,16,284. Active cases stood at 1,00,437.

Detection of multiple COVID variants puts Jharkhand on high alarm

Alarmed by the detection of several variants of coronavirus in Jharkhand with 328 confirmed cases surfacing so far, the state government has directed the authorities to despatch samples within 48 hours of a patients death for conducting a genetic study to understand the mortality rate and evolve a strategy to contain the spread, a top official said Tuesday.

Battling the deadly second wave of the COVID-19 that has claimed 5,100 lives in tribal-dominated Jharkhand, the state government is concerned as these variants like Delta, Alpha, and Kappa are said to be more transmissible.

"As many as 328 of the 364 samples have tested positive for variants like Delta, Alfa, and Kappa in the state in course of whole genomic sequencing", State Health Secretary, Arun Kumar Singh told PTI.

SC refuses to interfere with CBSE, CISCE assessment scheme for evaluating Class 12 students

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to interfere with the assessment scheme propounded by both CBSE and CISCE for evaluation of Class 12 students, whose board examinations have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The top court rejected the objections raised by a parents' body as well as students and said that it is not possible to have a second guess approach with regard to various aspects of the assessment scheme.

A special bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari said, We accept the scheme as propounded by both the boards-(CBSE and CISCE) .

Indore hospital sees 49 black fungus deaths in 40 days

The state-run Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital (MYH) in Indore in Madhya Pradesh has seen 49 deaths due to Mucormycosis or black fungus infection in the past 40 days, a senior official from the facility said on Tuesday.

The hospital, attached to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College, had 614 black fungus patients, of which 283 have been discharged and 49 have died, most having been brought to the hospital from different parts of the state in the late stage, Dean Dr Sanjay Dixit told PTI.

While the mortality rate from the rare and dangerous fungal infection stands at 8 per cent in the MYH, Dean Dixit said this rate in hospitals in other parts of the country was in the 40-50 per cent range.

India on Tuesday morning reported its lowest single-day tally of new cases in 91 days. The total caseload rose by 42,640 on Tuesday to 2,99,77,861.

Maharashtra on Monday reported 6,270 new cases, a four-month low daily count, taking its tally to 59,79,051, while 94 deaths pushed the toll to 1,18,313, the state health department said.

The infection count was the lowest since February 23 when 6218 cases were reported. Maharashtra had recorded 6,971 cases on 21 February.

As many as 13,758 patients were discharged during the day, taking the number of recovered cases to 57,33,215, a statement from the health department said.

There are now 1,24,398 active cases in the state, where the recovery rate is 95.89 per cent, while the fatality rate is 1.98 per cent, the statement said.

The health department said 1,54,835 people were tested for in the last 24 hours, it said, adding so far, 3,96,69,693 tests have been conducted in the state.

According to the statement, Mumbai city reported 518 new cases and seven deaths, taking its infection tally to 7,20,531 and the toll to 15,305.

In the Mumbai division, comprising the city and its satellite towns, there were 1,473 cases and 15 deaths. This took the cumulative caseload in the region to 15,77,339 and deaths to 31,304, it said.

In the Mumbai division, Bhiwandi Nizampur city (Thane district) reported just one case and no death for the second day in a row, the statement said.

Thane city, Kalyan-Dombivali, Ulhasnagar, Mira-Bhayander, Vasai Virar city, Panvel city and Palghar district also did not report a single death, it added.

The Nashik division reported 488 cases and four deaths. Ahmednagar city, Dhule city and Jalgaon city did not report a single new death due to the viral infection, the health department said. Nandurbar, Nashik and Dhule districts, too, did not report any fresh death.

The Pune division recorded 1,285 cases. Within the division, Pimpri-Chinchwad did not register any fresh death, the statement said. The Kolhapur division reported 2,362 cases, while the Aurangabad division registered 171 new infections, but no death, it said.

The Latur division reported 273 cases. Latur and Nanded districts did not see a single fatality due to , the statement said.

The Akola division reported 144 cases and two deaths. Akola district, Amravati city, Yavatmal district and Buldhana district did not report any fresh death, it said.

The Nagpur division reported 74 cases and one death (in rural Nagpur), the statement said. No -related deaths were reported in Nagpur city, Chandrapur city and districts of Wardha, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli, it said.

Maharashtra's are as follows: Positive cases 59,79 ,051; new cases 6,270; ddeaths 1,18,313; recoveries 57,33,215; active cases 1,24,398; total tests so far 3,96,69,693.
