A group of men entered an under-construction building neighbouring a bank in northeast Delhi's Farsh Bazar area near Shahdara on Sunday night. They then broke a wall to enter the bank and stole Rs 55 lakh. The thieves opened the safe of the bank using a gas cutter.
On Monday morning, the employees of the bank found the safe cut open and cash missing. As per bank officials, at least Rs 55 lakh which was deposited on Friday and Saturday was gone. The bank was closed on Sunday and, hence, the police believe the robbery took place on Sunday night.
The accused have not yet been identified and traced.
During investigation, the police discovered that the CCTV cameras inside the bank were switched off. "The accused had switched the digital video recorder off soon after entering the bank," a senior cop is quoted in the Times of India.
The police are going through CCTV footage from nearby areas and roads that lead to the bank to spot any suspicious movement or vehicle used by the accused.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) R Sathiyasundaram, a case under relevant sections has been registered and efforts are on to identify, trace and arrest the suspects. Multiple teams have been formed for the same.
The police are examining bank employees to check if any insider was involved. The guard who was on duty at the time of the incident is also being questioned.
